Three Methods of Hydrogen Peroxide Determination in Rainwater

  • Chapter
Physico-Chemical Behaviour of Atmospheric Pollutants

Summary

Various analytical methods are presented for the determination of hydrogen peroxide in rainwater:

  • a Polarographie determination using the H2O2 reduction on the dropping mercury electrode in five different media ;

  • a voltamperometric determination using the H2O2 oxidation on a rotating disk electrode ;

  • a spectrophotometric determination using the peroxidase enzyme to catalyse the oxidation reaction of the indicator ABTS.

For the three methods, detectionlimits are estimated. The voltamperometric method is the most sensitive with a detection limit : 5.10-9 M. This method could be adapted to an inexpensive portable amperometric titrator which could measure an electrical current at constant potential. The current is proportional to hydrogen peroxide concentration. This method allows to perform one determination each 3 minutes.
