Abstract
The microdistribution of Littorina scutulata and L. sitkana on the rocky shores of Vancouver Island can be related to their feeding characteristics. Their gut contents, studied with light and fluorescence microscopy, showed that both species are opportunistic herbivores. However, L. scutulata can feed on the sparse epi- and endolithic microflora of the supralittoral zone, while L. sitkana is confined to special microenvironments, with abundant epilithic growth.
