Radiological Safety and Quality

Abstract

The European Union has a long history of successful dealings with radiation protection of patients in radiological imaging. This includes the adoption in the 1980s of specific Euratom legislation and its subsequent updates, the publication of the European guidance, the support of research and the facilitation of information exchange and stakeholder involvement. Today the rapidly developing medical imaging technology together with an increasing number of patients undergoing radiological procedures have led to a global increase in population doses from medical exposure. There is growing concern from stakeholders regarding the justification and optimization of some radiological procedures, the training and education of medical radiation practitioners and the scarcity of reliable information. In response to these challenges, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy is undertaking a series of initiatives and actions to address these concerns.
