Abstract

A leading theme of the book is the evolution of the culture of architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), considered along the directions that innovation is taking with digital design and fabrication.

The Introduction addresses the different ways in which various countries have dealt with the issues of design, manufacturing, and construction, how the technical knowledge relates to design and to the ability to make, the different contributions provided by various techniques, and with them the meanings expressed by the architecture.

Digital technologies use the languages of information technology. Computer science deals with the study of these languages, and could be seen as either a branch of technology, providing the tools for progress, or as a branch of mathematics, therefore a methodology for the advance of scientific knowledge.

The book offers a perspective on innovation of digital technologies in design and construction that can help the reader to understand the context and direction of their evolution, and to interpret the requirements that drove their development, the challenges they were and are called upon to face that, in the end, contribute to shaping the technological culture in AEC.
