Strategies for Achieving Food Security in Central Asia

Abstract

Twenty years have passed since Uzbekistan became independent. Following independence and the dissolution of existing trading arrangements, Uzbekistan faced a choice between self- sufficiency in food production and food security through a combination of own production and regional trade. Although Uzbekistan is self-sufficient in terms of food at present time, the problem of supplying food to a growing population and especially ensuring balanced and safe nutrition is a real one for future food security. This paper presents an overview of food security, a key welfare indicator, in Uzbekistan. The datasets that are available in the public domain are used to generate an overview.
