International Perspectives on Teaching and Learning with GIS in Secondary Schools

Abstract

This chapter first deals with the educational imprint on the socioeconomic setup left by the successive colonizers of the Maltese Islands. It then examines the development of the local educational system over the past decades. We discuss the role of recent technological developments in secondary schooling in Malta, with particular reference to Geography, the handling of geographic information and use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The chapter concludes on the need for further interaction between the educational sector and growing ICT industry in the islands.
