Abstract
If we have to add or subtract one-fourth (denoted ¼) and one fifth (denoted \( \frac{1}{5} \)), we have to render them into same denomination (savarṇana). This is done by noting that one-fifth of one-fourth and one-fourth of one-fifth are both identical, namely one-twentieth (denoted \(\frac{1}{{20}}\)). This is represented in Figure 3.1.
