Samenvatting

Diepe hersenstimulatie (‘deep brain stimulation’, DBS) is een invasieve behandeling die bij de obsessieve-compulsieve stoornis (OCS) therapeutisch effect kan hebben bij patiënten met ernstige en invaliderende symptomen, die niet of onvoldoende reageren op een grondig doorgevoerd behandelalgoritme van farmacotherapie én cognitief-gedragstherapeutische behandeling. Op basis van de beschikbare gegevens uit onderzoeken met een beperkt aantal patiënten lijken de effecten van DBS in de verschillende anatomische regio’s die betrokken zijn bij OCS vergelijkbaar. Hetzelfde geldt voor de bijwerkingen. Op basis van dezelfde onderzoeken manifesteert het effect zich op korte termijn, en blijft behouden op de lange termijn. Diverse aspecten, zoals prognostische factoren voor het effect, onderzoek naar het effect van DBS op de kwaliteit van leven en onderzoek naar adequate stimulusparameters voor een optimaal effect, zijn nog te weinig onderzocht.
