Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk wordt een 76-jarige man beschreven die aanvankelijk, met alleen een geheugenstoornis, redelijk goed functioneert. In de loop der jaren neemt de geheugenstoornis toe. Op andere cognitieve domeinen ontstaan dan ook stoornissen en uiteindelijk wordt de diagnose beginnende dementie gesteld, hoogstwaarschijnlijk door de ziekte van Alzheimer. Het diagnostische proces – dat zich uitstrekt over enkele jaren – wordt gedetailleerd beschreven, net als effecten van cognitief disfunctioneren op de dagelijkse activiteiten. Begonnen wordt met de diagnostische criteria die van belang zijn voor de (neuro)psycholoog betrokken bij neuropsychologische diagnostiek bij dementiepatiënten, inclusief algemene richtlijnen, bedoeld voor alle disciplines. Het neuropsychologisch (test)onderzoek wordt gedetailleerd beschreven. Ook wordt een behandeltraject voor patiënt en echtgenote uiteengezet, bestaande uit methodieken waarmee zij worden ondersteund in het zo goed als mogelijk volhouden van hun dagelijkse activiteiten. Doel hierbij is de patiënt in zijn sociaal functioneren te ondersteunen, waarbij een zo hoog mogelijke kwaliteit van leven wordt beoogd.
