Samenvatting

Neuropathische pijn is gerelateerd aan een beschadiging of functiestoornis van het perifere zenuwstelsel. Voor pijn door beschadiging van het centrale zenuwstelsel wordt ook de term centrale pijn gebruikt. Aangezien bij centrale pijn vermoedelijk dezelfde pathofysiologische veranderingen optreden als bij beschadiging van het perifere zenuwstelsel, wordt centrale pijn ook neuropathische pijn genoemd. De principes van pijnbestrijding zijn hierbij dezelfde.
