Abstract
Stress is een wijdverbreid begrip waarvan de betekenis in het alledaagse gebruik ogenschijnlijk duidelijk is. Maar wanneer men er langer bij stilstaat, kan men zich afvragen wat het precies betekent. Wat houdt gestresst zijn in? Is het datgene wat de bewuste persoon aan zijn of haar hoofd heeft, of gaat het om de reactie van die persoon hierop, bijvoorbeeld gejaagdheid of vluchten in ongezond gedrag? Of zijn beide mogelijkheden soms onderdeel van het begrip stress? Vervolgens kan men zich afvragen waarom juist deze persoon gestresst is, terwijl een ander met dezelfde dingen aan zijn of haar hoofd nergens last van heeft. Waarom is de ene persoon stressbestendiger dan de ander?
