Abstract
Faced with a suffering, dyspneic patient with acute respiratory failure, we often wonder whether there are the objective conditions to start ventilation therapy. We lovers of NIV are always being asked what are the criteria for starting NIV, while I have never heard an intensive care specialist being asked what are the objective parameters for intubating a patient.
