Abstract

In the field of thoracic traumas, mediastinal lesions have a particular importance related to the vital structures involved, and this accounts for their severity and high mortality rate.

Airways, main vessels, heart, and esophagus are in close proximity with the result that life-threatening lesions are frequently associated. In emergency situations, timeliness is determinant and has two main objectives: to restore ventilation and to resolve hemorrhages or any other condition jeopardizing hemodynamic condition, such as heart tamponade. The diagnostic phase must favor promptness of action which can be determinant for successful management.

The principles of surgical treatment of mediastinal lesions are herein reported from a strictly practical point of view.
