Con il termine aloe (dal greco αλς-αλος = mare, perché la pianta vegeta in prossimità del mare, o dall’arabo alloech e alua = sostanza amara, o dall’ebraico halat = amaro, riferito al sapore amaro del succo) le Farmacopee e i Formulari di diversi Paesi hanno inteso indicare il succo condensato col calore estratto dalle foglie di diverse specie di Aloe (arborescens, barbadensis ecc.)
