Basic CBCT Anatomy

Abstract

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been demonstrated to be an advance in dental and maxillofacial imaging. It has become increasingly important in implant dentistry and in the fields of endodontics and orthodontics. Also, radiation dose can be kept as low as reasonably achievable. The use of such technology should be subordinated to an accurate knowledge of anatomical structures that constitute the skull. This chapter provides an insight over the anatomy of the maxillofacial bones, of the nasal cavity, the paranasal sinuses, the temporomandibular joint, and the oral cavity. The second part of the chapter includes a series of CBCT scans with the corresponding anatomical references.
