La virtualizzazione del concetto di struttura molecolare può essere considerata la prima e fondamentale operazione di codifica informatica di cui la chimica necessita. Il numero sempre crescente di nuove strutture chimiche scoperte e la loro sempre più rilevante applicazione in diversi ambiti della chimica, della biologia e della fisica richiedono oggigiorno strategie informatiche per archiviare, e conseguentemente estrarre, in maniera efficiente e veloce milioni di informazioni strutturali e di proprietà associate. In questo paragrafo verranno raccolti i concetti e le procedure più rilevanti nell’ambito della chemoinformatica.
