La marcatura dei globuli rossi con traccianti radioattivi è stata eseguita “in vitro” per prima volta da Gray e Sterling nel 1950 con lo scopo di determinare la sopravvivenza dei globuli rossi, la misura della massa eritrocitaria e la valutazione delle tecniche di conservazione del sangue.
