Il gioco d’azzardo patologico

Riassunto

L’importanza della prevenzione, nella pratica medica, é fondamentale. Nonostante l’impegno sulla prevenzione nell’ambito della salute mentale e dei disturbi da dipendenza sia diffuso, non c’é un’ampia disponibilitá di dati che vadano a supportarne l’efficacia. Nell’area della prevenzione dell’abuso di sostanze, sono state condotte ricerche strutturate su vasta scala per valutare l’efficacia di singoli programmi, quali il progetto DARE — Drug Abuse Resistance Education (Clayton et al. 1996) o indagini annuali che esaminano comportamenti correlati all’abuso come nel caso del National Household Drug Abuse Survey (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration 2003). Tuttavia, il campo del gioco d’azzardo problematico e patologico é stato molto meno studiato. Quindi, nonostante sia stato fatto qualche tentativo di prevenzione per il gioco d’azzardo patologico (GAP), l’investimento in questa direzione é stato molto limitato rispetto a quanto avvenuto in altri settori della salute mentale e dei disturbi da uso di sostanze e l’efficacia degli interventi di prevenzione — in termini di riduzione o eliminazione del problema nella popolazione adulta — non é stata, ad oggi, sufficientemente indagata. Lo scopo di questo capitolo é quello di passare in rassegna alcuni programmi di prevenzione per il gioco d’azzardo problematico e patologico rivolti a pazienti adulti con lo scopo di evidenziare la loro pertinenza per lo psichiatra. I programmi di prevenzione rivolti agli adolescenti verranno trattati nel Capitolo 11, “Prevenzione e trattamento del gioco d’azzardo problematico e patologico negli adolescenti”.
