Abstract

Imaging in the intensive care unit (ICU) has to deal with several disorders affecting the critically ill patient. In such patients, one or more organs are so compromised that management requires continuous monitoring of vital functions and their support through external devices, either mechanical or pharmacological. Above all, two functions of exceeding importance are often impaired and require external support: respiration and circulation. The task frequently involves the use of mechanical instruments and the administration of fluids and drugs, in turn, may interfere with, or even damage thoracic organs and structures.
