Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis presents with inflammation of the synovium with resulting chronic pain. For severe cases where aggressive interaction is required, surgical removal/repair of the synovium is practiced. However, in many cases the intra-articular administration of therapeutic radioisotopes attached to particles with the appropriate size and stability characteristics is a simple, inexpensive alternative to counteract the inflammation of the synovium which leads to this chronic pain. In this chapter the types of radioisotopes, the spectrum and types of particles to which they are attached, and the use of these agents for radiation synovectomy (radiosynoviorthesis) are discussed.
