Abstract
Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Del., commonly known as Desert Date or Hingota is an evergreen spiny xerophytic tree. This plant can endure in a wide range of climatic conditions. This plant has got incredible importance and being used in treatment of a number of diseases since ages. The plant parts like roots, fruits contain diosgenin which can be used in pharmaceutical industry in production of oral contraceptives and steroids. Also the seed oil can be used as biofuel as combustion energy of oil is comparable to that of diesel. The present chapter deals with the observations obtained on enormous amount of studies undertaken in different aspects of plant tissue culture and molecular biology in Balanites aegyptiaca Del.
