Abstract
It has been shown that the development and growth of mast cells are dependent upon interleukin-3 (IL-3), IL-4 and IL-9 (IhIe et al., 1983; Schmitt et al., 1987; Hultner et al., 1990). On the other hand, it has also been reported that histamine release from mast cells or basophils is induced or potentiated by several cytokines, such as IL - 1 α, IL - 1 β, IL-2, IL-3, IL-4 and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) (Massey et al., 1989; Levi-Schaffer et al., 1991; Haak-Frendscho et al., 1988). However, most of these studies are carried out using basophils and mucosal type mast cells, but not with connective tissue type mast cells. Levi-Schaffer et al. (1991) reported that IL-2, IL-3 and IL-4 enhanced both the basal and anti-IgE-mediated histamine release from rat and murine peritoneal mast cells co-cultured with fibroblasts. Moreover, there has been no demonstration about the inhibitory effect of cytokine on the histamine release from mast cells.
