Zusammenfassung

Der letzte Samstag vor Weihnachten, der 23. Dezember 2000, war einer der umsatzstärksten Tage für den Schweizer Einzelhandel. Die Kunden besorgten ihre letzten Weihnachtsgeschenke und versorgten sich mit Lebensmitteln für die folgenden vier Tage. Zwei Stunden vor Ladenschluss brach der elektronische Zahlungsverkehr (electronic fund transfer, EFT) in weiten Teilen der Schweiz zusammen. Während mehr als dreißig Minuten war es nicht möglich, an den Automaten Geld zu beziehen oder in den Geschäften mit elektronischen Zahlungsmitteln zu bezahlen. Der Grund für die Panne war eine Fehlfunktion des Roboters, welcher die Datensicherungsbänder automatisch wechselt.
