In Chapter 1 it was argued that STI plays a decisive role for the long term economic wealth of a population. The main players involved in the production of STI are authors, scientific libraries, publishers, bookstores, scientific associations, and collecting societies. This chapter examines the role of the different players in the market to determine where the introduction of recommender systems is a strategic option to gain further impact on the market in the future. In order to do this, a structural model for the value chain of the production within STI markets is developed based on the 2-3-6-concept, a special value chain presentation.
