Abstract
This chapter will present the experiences the benchmark railways of the US, Germany, Russia, and Japan have made with improving their operational efficiency. The measures undertaken by these railways to cut costs and improve their performance, which are relevant to address the inefficiencies diagnosed at Chinese Railways in the previous chapter, will be presented below. For ease of application, the experiences of the benchmark railways will be structured analogous to the inefficiencies of Chinese Railways in chapter 7, i.e. holding, passenger, freight, and operations.
