Summary

The method of digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is applied to the study of a time-dependent natural convective flow. The particle image patterns are recorded with a CCD camera and stored on video tape. The velocity distributions are obtained by cross-correlating the information of sucessive video frames. The experiments verify the possibility of taking “cinematographic” velocity measurements of an unsteady flow with a relatively long characteristic time scale.
