Abstract

Work in the field of terpene chemistry has been in many respects of fundamental importance for shaping and developing organic chemistry. The classical unity of the terpene group of compounds is given by their simple composition (limited to the three basic organogenic elements) and by the uniformity of the rules governing their structure. This, together with the great structural diversity and ubiquity of occurrence, has made the terpenes the object of an immense amount of research, often of far-reaching theoretical implications and great practical interest.
