Abstract

The limonoid bitter principles are a class of C26 degraded triterpenes believed to arise as oxidation products of tetracyclic triterpenes. A second group of related bitter principles, the simaroubolides, occur as further breakdown products in this series (30, 55, 97). Limonoids are a stereo-chemically homogeneous group and are all biogenetically derivable from a tirucallol type tetracyclic triterpene.
