Zusammenfassung

Der Erreger, das Corynebacterium diphtheriae, ist seit 1883/1884 (Klebs/Löffler) bekannt. Es ist ein aerobes, pleomorphes grampositives Bakterium, von welchem drei Biotypen, mitis, intermedius und gravis, unterschieden werden, was nichts mit der Pathogenität zu tun hat. Ein Bakteriophagen-Gen ist für die Produktion des 1888 gefundenen Diphtherie-Exotoxins (62-kd,Polypeptid) verantwortlich. Nur dieses ist für die Pathogenität verantwortlich.
