Zusammenfassung
Der Anteil älterer Menschen an der Gesamtbevölkerung nimmt stetig zu. Während die mittlere Lebenserwartung für Männer in westlichen Industrieländern an der Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert noch 47 Jahre und für Frauen 53 Jahre betrug, wurden zuletzt für Männer 75 Jahre und für Frauen nahezu 80 Jahre ermittelt. Trotz der Tatsache, dass die höhere Lebenserwartung vor allem auf eine drastische Reduktion der Säuglingssterblichkeit sowie der Sterblichkeit an Infektionskrankheiten im jungen und mittleren Lebensalter zurückzuführen ist, kann man annehmen, dass unter anderem auch die Fortschritte der Medizin in der Behandlung von chronischen Krankheiten zur Zunahme der Zahl an lebenswerten Jahren beigetragen haben.
