Summary
Rock Reinforcement of the Cavern at Veytaux by Rock Anchors and Pneumatically Applied Concrete. This paper deals with the methods used and experience gained during the installation of rock anchors and application of pneumatically applied concrete to stabilize the rather badly fractured rock, forming the roof and walls of the Veytaux Power-House (pumping and generating station), which is part of the Hongrin-Leman Hydro-Electric Development in Switzerland.
The cavern has a length of 137.50 metres (~450 ft) and a cross-section of excavation closely approximating a circle of 30.50 metres (100 ft) diameter.
Marly limestone and limestone-schist are the principal components of the rock mass, and while the stratification is almost horizontal, the strata are undulating, and have several groups of fractures cutting through them in a vertical direction. The entrance to the power-house is 65 metres (214 ft) and the far end is 150 metres (492 ft) below the ground surface.
From the outset, the scheduling of the project indicated that only a comparatively short time would be permitted for carrying out the work, and with this in mind a very comprehensive study was made to find a rapid and economical method of excavating and stabilizing the cavern. Early in this investigation, following model tests, the use of rock anchors and sprayed-on concrete for stabilizing the walls and roof showed up as a very practical solution of the problem, and this method was subsequently adopted.
The working method chosen was to excavate, in successive stages, a section at the periphery of the cavern in the form of a half-ring, and to immediately stabilize the exposed rock face by installating rock anchors and sprayed-on concrete. By using this method, the installation of a temporary supporting structure was eliminated.
The excavation of the core was then carried out in complete safety, using normal quarrying methods, which enabled a very high daily rate of removal to be maintained. In order to facilitate the removal of the broken rock, it was advantageous to break out the core in two phases, and for practical reasons, the demarcation line between the two was chosen at the machine room floor level. Following the removal of the upper-core, the lower part was broken out as a complete unit. Immediately after excavation, the stabilization of the side-walls, by means of rock anchors, was carried out, followed by concreting in situ. For these side-walls it was not necessary to use sprayed-on concrete, also the number of rock anchors required was not so great as in the roof. The end walls, however, had to be stabilized with rock anchors and sprayed-on concrete.
Excavation of the cavern was started in November 1965. Injections for water-proofing and consolidating the rock below the cavern took two months, while the excavation of the half-ring at the periphery of the roof, was completed in September 1966 (volume excavated, 17 000 cubic metres / ~22 000 cubic yards). The upper core (38 500 cubic metres / ~50 000 cubic yards) was then excavated in twelve weeks and the lower core (22 500 cubic metres / ~29 400 cubic yards) in nine weeks. The whole of the excavation, a total of 78 000 cubic metres (~101 400 cubic yards), was finished in 17 months.
After the excavation was finished, in March 1967, concreting and equipment installation started and at the time of writing (February 1968) is still in progress.
Conventional methods of excavation using falsework to support the roof would never have permitted the removal of such quantities of rock in so short a time, especially considering the poor characteristics of the rock. The volume of overbreak was only about 4.6 %o of the calculated total volume of excavation, as against a normal in-situ concrete roof, which, with a design thickness of 1.5 metres, would have in many places an actual thickness of 4.0 metres.
The principle used of driving a support ring into the rock following the periphery of a cavern is not new. However, this is the first time that it has been used under such difficult conditions for a cavern of such large dimensions. The simplified descriptions of how certain problems, encountered during the design and during the actual work, were overcome should not be taken to mean that these problems were of minor nature.
The financial savings involved show up particularly in the cost of excavation, which became quite easy, and also in various other work methods which were greatly simplified. The saving in time was considerable, with similar reductions in administration costs and machinery rentals.
The behaviour of the rock mass surrounding the cavern is under constant observation by means of a complete system of measuring devices (telerocmeters and special measuring anchors).
