Summary
Laws of Models Concerning Longitudinally Corrugated, Embedded Tubes. Corrugated metal pipes, also of non-circular cross-section, are used for tunnel lining of many types of underpasses and drainage structures. It would be desirable to transfer knowledge gained through measurements on existing pipes or as a result of laboratory experiments to similar structures of other span and wall-thicknesses, but a similarity in bending and in change of circumference is impossible among standard corrugated metal pipes.
Where bending is the principal problem, one may neglect all other problems of strain. However, even here, there are such narrow limits set for the transfer of results that practical application of them is only possible in exceptional cases.
The modelling laws require other materials as well as other cross-sections of the model tubes. Non-corrugated plastic tubes have proven to be particularly suitable (Araldite rings for photo-elastic measurements). Instead of a compacted fill of sand, the use of steel rollers (of mixed diameters to produce a quasi isotropic cohesionfree continuum) may be of advantage for model structures, whereby internal friction may be varied through roughening the rollers, and the modulus of foundation may be varied by means of rubber inserts around the model ring; in this way the requirements of the modelling laws may be met.
