Zusammenfassung
Neutronensterne entstehen, wenn massereiche Sterne ihren Energievorrat aufgebraucht haben – der zentrale Eisen-Nickel-Core des Sterns kollabiert innerhalb von Millisekunden auf einen Neutronenstern von 20 km Durchmesser. Neutronen sind Fermionen und bauen daher auch einen Quantendruck auf wie die Elektronen in Weißen Zwergen – nur ist die Materie jetzt so dicht gepackt wie in einem Atomkern. Das bewirkt auch, dass die Neutronen nicht zerfallen können. Diese Objekte sind am Anfang extrem heiß und weisen Zentraltemperaturen von bis zu 100 Mrd. Grad Kelvin auf. Ihre Oberflächentemperaturen liegen allerdings im Bereich von nur einigen Millionen Grad Kelvin. Die Kühlung dieser jungen Neutronensterne erfolgt allerdings über die Emission von Neutrinos aus dem Innern. Neutronensterne bestehen in erster Linie aus einer Neutronenflüssigkeit umgeben von einer Kruste aus schweren Atomkernen und freien relativistischen Elektronen. In massereichen Neutronensternen mit Massen über 1,6 Sonnenmassen werden die Neutronen im Zentrum so dicht gepackt, dass sie sich in freie Quarks auflösen – es entsteht ein Quark-Gluon-Plasma, das sonst nur in Beschleunigern und im frühen Universum erzeugt werden kann. Junge Neutronensterne sind oft stark magnetisiert und erscheinen dann als Radiopulsare, von denen es in der Milchstraße etwa 20.000–50.000 geben sollte.
