Zusammenfassung
Alle Sterne, die genügend Masse besitzen, Kernfusionen zu zünden (\(M > 0,075\) Sonnenmassen), haben ein endliches Alter und hinterlassen am Ende ihrer Entwicklung bestimmte Relikte (Weiße Zwerge, Neutronensterne oder Schwarze Löcher). Die Dauer ihrer Entwicklung ist umso kürzer, je größer die Masse des Sterns ist - Rote Zwerge fusionieren Wasserstoff zu Helium über 100 Mrd. Jahre lang, die Sonne erreicht ein Alter von gerade 13 Mrd. Jahren, Sirius A mit einer Masse von 2,1 Sonnenmassen nur eine Milliarde Jahre und Sterne mit einigen zehn Sonnenmassen nur noch einige Millionen Jahre, bevor sie in einer Kern-Kollaps-Supernova enden.
