Proteine und natürliche Polynucleotide sind vom Standpunkt der Polymerchemie Copolymere. Von Homopolymeren unterscheiden sich Copolymere durch drei strukturelle Parameter:

Sie enthalten zwei oder mehr verschiedene Typen an Monomereinheiten.

Das molare Verhältnis dieser Comonomere kann variieren.

Die Sequenz der Comonomere kann variieren.
