Zusammenfassung
In Indien sind es zwei kontrastierende, vom Menschen für die Salzgewinnung genutzte Habitate, die das Überleben des Zwergflamingos möglich machen. (1) Der „Rann of Kutch“, besteht aus Salzsümpfen zwischen Land und Meer, die im Wechsel von Süß- und Salzwasser geflutet werden. Auf der schier endlosen Ebene finden sich Refugien, in denen die meisten Zwergflamingos Indiens geboren werden. (2) Der riesige Salzsee Sambhar Sagar dient als Quelle von Arthrospira und der mit ihr konkurrierenden Mikrophyten. Ein Mosaik unterschiedlichster Salzteiche am Sambhar könnte für die experimentelle Erforschung des Nahrungsverhaltens des Zwergflamingos dienen. Der Kreis unserer Reise zu den Feuervögeln schliesst sich am heiligen Fluss Ganges, wo sich spirituelle und naturwissenschaftliche Gedankengänge in einer wechselhaften Beziehung zwischen Pilgern, Umweltforschern und Algenkundlern verbinden.
