Zusammenfassung
Im südlichen Afrika sucht der Zwergflamingo sein Auskommen an den ausgedehnten Salzpfannen des Binnenlandes, den Wattenmeeren der Küste und kleinen Salzteichen der rauhen Wüsten und Halbwüsten. Brutaktivitäten zeigt er in den Glutkesseln der Makgadikgadi-Pfanne (Botswana) und in der Etosha-Pfanne (Namibia). Die Bruterfolge sind nicht hoch genug, um den Fortbestand des Zwergflamingos zu sichern. Deshalb haben gerade hier Überlegungen zur Schaffung künstlicher Brutgebiete eingesetzt, die in einem originellen und erfolgreichen Experiment am Kamfers Dam, Kimberley, in Südafrika mündeten. In dieser Stadt, die ihre Entwicklung der Diamantenindustrie verdankt, kulminiert das Motiv der „Pink Diamonds“ in seiner hoffnungsgebenden Vision für Vogelschützer aus aller Welt zum Überlebenskampf des Zwergflamingos in vom Menschen dominierten Naturräumen.
