Cholesterin ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil biologischer Membranen und Vorstufe der Gallensäuren und Steroidhormone. Es hat ein Gerüst aus 27 Kohlenstoffatomen und gehört zur Familie der Isoprenoide. Es wird in einer komplexen Reaktionsfolge aus 18 Molekülen Acetyl-CoA synthetisiert.
