Die Gesamtheit der Proteine eines Organismus wird als Proteom bezeichnet. Die Proteine bzw. ihre codierenden Gene sind miteinander „verwandt“. Mutation und Duplikation sind zwei der Mechanismen, durch die sich die Vielfalt der Proteine entwickelt hat.
