Zusammenfassung

Das vorliegende Kapitel gibt einen Überblick über die biologischen Grundlagen, welche für ein Verständnis des Zusammenhangs zwischen psychosozialen Faktoren und der Entstehung und Aufrechterhaltung von Krankheiten notwendig sind. Der Aufbau des Gehirns und des Nervensystems, welches über periphere Botenstoffe die Anpassung des Gesamtorganismus an die Umwelt steuert, wird in Grundzügen dargestellt. Neben dem Nervensystem werden zwei weitere wichtige periphere Kommunikationsnetzwerke des Körpers, das endokrine System und das Immunsystem, vorgestellt und deren Interaktion mit dem Nervensystem aufgezeigt. Weiterhin werden Befunde zum Einfluss von Entwicklungsbedingungen sowie deren Interaktion mit genetischen Faktoren erläutert. Abschließend werden neuere Entwicklungen in molekularbiologischen Techniken sowie diagnostische und therapeutische Implikationen biologischer Forschung für die Verhaltensmedizin diskutiert.
