The Aseptic Unit Essential to a Modern Hospital

  • Chapter
Aseptic Environment and Cancer Treatment

Abstract

Human beings share their environment with a great variety of other living things, the micro-organisms being one of them. Man is in constant contact with bacteria and viruses, and carries a variety of these micro-organisms, the natural defences of the body being protection against their harmful effects. Under certain conditions man can carry pathogenic organisms without ill effects to himself. The micro-organisms which can live quite harmlessly when carried by normal subjects can become dangerous if the host is debilitated, especially if his illness is accompanied by a lack of granulocytes, or insufficiency of immunological reactions.
