Abstract
The distribution of Calanus in the sea is some guide to the influence of its inanimate environment, and our knowledge has been supplemented by studies in the laboratory. Its relations to the animate environment are of economic importance because it acts as a link between the phytoplankton on the one hand and the pelagic carnivores on the other, turning the phytoplankton into food palatable to whales and to many species of fish.
