Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

Callus production, cell cultures, and protoplast fusion offer exciting possibilities for augmenting current tree-improvement programs. One of the main limitations of tree breeding is the relatively slow life cycle of trees and the minimum of 15–20 years between generations. Recent improvement in selection, hybridization and fertilizer application will undoubtedly increase the production of wood for timber and pulp; however, the advantage of callus and cell culture is the rapid vegetative propagation of trees that are difficult to root or graft by conventional methods. Selection of 3–4 year old vigorous seedlings with high photosynthetic efficiency, rapidly propagated by culturing methods, may possibly reduce by as much as 75% the time to obtain improved planting stock for reforestation.
