Abstract
The ore from which iron (Fe) is extracted is a collection of oxides (FeO, Fe304, Fe203) which are reduced (i.e. the oxygen is extracted) in a blast furnace by passing through the ore a current of carbon monoxide (CO) which is produced from the reaction of carbon (coke) and oxygen (air). The product is iron and carbon dioxide (CO2) as a result of reactions of the form: \( F{\rm{e}}O + CO \to F{\rm{e}}O + C{O_2} \)
