Natürliche Gewässer sind mit ihren Lebensräumen und Lebensgemeinschaften vielfältige Ökosysteme. Diese reichen von maritimen Ökosystemen wie Tiefsee-, Schelf-, Brandungs-, Watt- und Brackwasserbereichen über Stillgewässer wie Seen, Weihern, Altgewässern, Hochmoorschlenken und nur zeitweilig wasserführenden Kleingewässern bis hin zu Quellen, Bächen, Flüssen und Strömen.
