Abstract
The basic aspects of percolation theory are briefly reviewed in this chapter. The theory of percolation is important for the main issue discussed in this book, namely, the presence of nanoscale phase separation in manganites — both in theory and experiments — and the explanation of the CMR effect as arising from a percolation process (see Chap. 17). The concept of percolation is well known in physics, and it has been reviewed by Stauffer and Aharony [16.1]. Their book is much recommended to the reader to find additional information on this important subject, supplementing the elementary primer provided here.
