Deposition of Nitrate and Ammonium from the Atmosphere to the Baltic Sea

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 148))

Abstract

The wet deposition over the Baltic Sea of inorganic nitrogen compounds (NO3 and NH4) has previously been estimated from precipitation sampling (e. g. Rodhe et al. 1980; HELCOM 1991). The deposition of organic nitrogen is less well known. Recently, Rahm et al. (1995) measured organic and inorganic nitrogen compounds accumulated on the ice in Bothnian Bay. Dry deposition has been estimated from concentrations in the air by the dry deposition velocity concept (Lindfors et al. 1991, 1993). The wet and dry deposition have also been calculated from emission data and longrange transport and from deposition models (e.g. Barrett and Berge 1996). This model included a number of source areas for deposition of the compounds in the Baltic. The present investigation shows that present deposition estimates differ from previous ones and this is caused mainly by a higher spatial (l×1°) and temporal (monthly) resolution. Further, a longer time period (1971–1991) has been used, including periods when few sampling stations were in use in the region. There are also some differences compared to previous estimates with regard to data quality control, interpolation technique and estimation of dry deposition. The main objective of this study was to calculate monthly deposition estimates for inorganic nitrogen species. The study first describes data treatment, then the mean values and trends that characterize the material are shown
