Abstract
Suppose that we observe certain events that appear at random time instants. For example, the events might be arrivals of buses at a bus terminal, or telephone calls addressed to a certain person, or failures of a piece of equipment. To be specific, we shall refer to some particular sort of event, say telephone calls.
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.
