Abstract

The main purpose of Master Planning is to synchronize the flow of materials along the complete supply chain. It supports the mid-term decisions on effective utilization of production, transportation, supply capacities, seasonal stock (along the lines of Anthony (1965)) and balancing of supply and demand. As a result of this synchronization, production and distribution entities are able to reduce inventory levels. This reduction is mainly founded in the redundancy of buffers between entities to enable a durable flow of material, caused by decentral decision processes. Due to decreasing variance of production and distribution quantities by coordinated plans, safety stocks can be reduced.
