Abstract

We have now gone as far as we can go with our considerations of the cortex as a purely statistical ensemble of axons, dendrites and synapses. It was our contention that the comparison of such quantities as axonal and dendritic density, density of spines and density of synapses would yield some ratios which could be interpreted in terms of cortical function, even before there was any mention of the shape of neurons and of their specific connections. Actually, we believe that some theoretical models of the cortical wiring are already excluded by the data at this stage.
